This post and its notes are the most blessed things in the world

“Perhaps you have forgotten. That’s one of the great problems of our modern world, you know. Forgetting. The victim never forgets. Ask an Irishman what the English did to him in 1920 and he’ll tell you the day of the month and the time and the name of every man they killed. Ask an Iranian what the English did to him in 1953 and he’ll tell you. His child will tell you. His grandchild will tell you. And when he has one, his great-grandchild will tell you too. But ask an Englishman—” He flung up his hands in mock ignorance. “If he ever knew, he has forgotten. ‘Move on!’ you tell us. ‘Move on! Forget what we’ve done to you. Tomorrow’s another day!’ But it isn’t, Mr. Brue.” He still had Brue’s hand. “Tomorrow was created yesterday, you see. That is the point I was making to you. And by the day before yesterday, too. To ignore history is to ignore the wolf at the door.”

- A Most Wanted Man, John le Carré

John le Carré has not, at any point, been fucking around.

“Stop saying 15 year olds with weird interests are cringe, they’re 15” this is true however you should also stop saying adults with weird interests are cringe because who gives a shit

I want to share some wisdom from my high school art teacher.

In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought she’d try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:

“So here’s the thing… I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and you’re doing interesting things with them.

“My biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Don’t hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.”

Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didn’t limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.

Takeaway here: be as cringe as you want. Don’t limit yourself based on other ppl’s tastes. They’re not you, and you are incredible 💕

For future reference

reblog to save a life in the (hopefully distant) future

a collection of tags and comments that read 1. #noooo 2."ikr? why are people so afraid of a robot dog. it's just a robot. and a cool one at that." 3.#too true #people don't ever blame people #just the closest thing that isn't a person #robots should take over btw #also gun robots are awesome and should be made 4.#they're dog shaped #all the targets are just places to pet 5.#this is all well n good but where do I pet it? 6.#wait this isn't teaching me where to pet it?? #yall want to hurt them?? [crying emoji]ALT

We’re not making out of the cyberpunk dystopia huh

You guys really need to understand that this is not a fucking dog

This is such a good example of why we need to be very self aware about our fiction.

Sentient robots that deserve rights and love are fictional. We made them up in stories.

Now, it’s my favorite kind of fiction. I love it. But it’s not real. It’s a metaphor for oppressed human beings.

Sentient AI doesn’t exist. There are corporations, and maybe even someday governments, who will want to convince you that it does, now and in the future.

Replikas don’t care about you and that robot dog is a military weapon.

This is ironic ‘cause military and police robot “dogs” (and the other robots they build) are built to do harm to oppressed people.

Yeah, the very people that are represented metaphorically in fiction by robots and androids.

Fiction is fun, and I love fictional robots with my whole heart. But I am not about to let it make me stupid about real life. :)

These things are not your friends. They are machines that will be used to hurt you and to hurt others. Do not fall for the propaganda that these things are just fun little friends! The above articles are the reality. Sorry.

not to have a #farmermoment but after growing up raising chickens i think everyone should raise chicken or some kind of egg laying fowl at least once

• good for children to learn the lifecycle of an animal and that not all babies live because other babies (foxes) need to eat even though its sad

• good for people to have a realistic understanding of how and where their food comes from as wel as the fact that you can eat eggs in a humane way + see how your birds are being treated

• chickens dont require much space but smaller birds like quail actually PREFER smaller spaces and lay eggs regularly like chickens do

• eggs taste so much better when the bird is happy and well taken care of

• you will never have a table scrap again. chickens eat everything you can even feed them their own (broken up) eggshells they NEED it. they even like chicken though i never did that it felt mean

• if every american with the knack and space for it raised chickens or quail and shared with their neighbors who cant because of space/money/time/physical ability we could single handedly destroy the egg industry (cant speak for other countries bc ive only ever lived here but input is appreciated 👍)

in this life there are few things i would like to see the death of more than the Home Owners Association and the Automobile Industry in place of ethically implemented bio-friendly public transportation

Like, I’m not saying that this is a good thing, but it’s kind of bleakly entertaining how over the course of my life my skill set as an online researcher has gone from being:

  1. Hugely valuable in the late 1990s and early 2000s because the discoverability of information in public-facing databases was fucking terrible and nobody knew how to organise anything; to
  2. Effectively useless throughout the 2010s because search engines enormously and rapidly improved and computer literacy was at an all-time high; and
  3. Back to being hugely valuable once again because SEO bullshit and the proliferation of AI-generated content have degraded online discoverability back to pre-2000 levels and computer literacy is in accelerating decline due to mobile devices deliberately obfuscating basic functionality so that app vendors can sell it back to you with embedded advertising.

It’s always interesting when my posts about technical writing end up doing numbers on librarian Tumblr. I guess we have something in common!

opens box that reads “i wanna draw again”. inside lies a note. the note says, “mental illness and difficult circumstances have taken years of interest, accessibility, and skill away from me. i want to forgive myself for that. i want to heal my relationship to my hobbies. i want to feel connected to something that once made me feel good, but the cyclic discouragement is difficult to overcome.” i turn over the note. on the back it reads “wannta drawe sexy bodies awooga”

seems like this one really resonated with the artists who dont do art fandom
